Wash Day: 10/23/11

Last Sunday I tried a new wash technique. For the first time I detangled prior to washing, as well as washed in sections. I secured these sections by plaiting the hair and placing goody ouchless bands at the ends to prevent the plaits from unravelling.

'Hair in plaits'

    'Close up of banded ends'

Would I do this again? Yes but with some tweaks..

While it did make setting my hair easier I still believe I lost almost the same amt of hair detangling post wash as I usually do. I think this was because the hair near my scalp still somehow managed to get slightly tangled. Also, and it may just be mind over matter but although I know I thoroughly washed my scalp it still feels a tad dirty.

I think I will take a look at the hairlista forums and discussions on washing in sections and then maybe try this again. Although my roots were tangled the hair that was plaited and banded was practically tangle free. This suggests that once I get my roots under control I should lose less hair on wash days.

Which leads me to this..I am ending my stretch early. It's just not worth it. My natural hair is really thick and I just cannot manage it anymore. Although I really wanted to hold out until my birthday to relax I'm tired of dealing with my two textures. I am also really concerned about some of the breakage I'm seeing and I know its probably due to stretching this long. I already bought my ORS Normal Relaxer system and hopefully I recover enough from this darned cold to relax tomorrow night :) I'm so excited!! I hope I'm at APL now!

Missing that creamy crack...

Currently in week 12 of a 16 week stretch and I am really fighting the urge to relax. My hair is just so unmanageable and unkempt! Not to mention detangling takes longer as I get further into this stretch.

If I want to wear my hair out thats fine, I can still pincurl and/or crosswrap and it looks presentable, most people dont even notice that I have all that new growth going on. However, I am trying to protective style as much as possible to prevent my hair from rubbing on my scarves and coats so I cant leave it out every day. My go-to protective styles are buns and ponys but when I do that my roots are exposed in all their kinky curly glory and I look like I NEED a relaxer. Sigh.

Tonight I am going to braid my hair and then try a faux-bob braidout in the morning..hopefully that works. If I dont get some more styling options soon I may reach for the creamy crack sooner than I wanted to!

One thing is for sure, this will be my last long stretch, after this I will only stretch for 10-12 weeks.

Inspiration

Hopefully this will be my hair, (in length at least if not in thickness) by December 2012.

Wash Day Revelations

I am currently in week 10 of a 16 week stretch, and I REALLY need to need to up my washes back to every 4-5 days instead of every 7. The last 3 weeks I only washed once a week and definitely paid the price. The amt of hair that I lost yesterday while detangling.... :(

On the bright side I tried a crosswrap for the first time and it came out pretty good! I'm really happy as doing a regular full head wrap is way too much manipulation once I hit that 6 week mark. Now I know I can get my hair straight during the later stages of my stretch.

I also need to revamp my moisturizing blend for my new growth, the castor oil is way too thick for me to spread it properly and it inevitably gets on my ends and weighs them down. I may mix it with my s curl and see how that goes.
I am also retiring my coconut oil and using extra virgin olive oil as my sealant until it warms up again. Coconut oil has a tendency to harden in cold weather so I dont want to risk using it and going outdoors in cold weather. I will probably still use it to pre-poo.

And last of all I have decided to try and reduce the amount of shedding I am having. while it just might be seasonal shedding I prefer toassume the worst and try a couple black tea rinses than just leave it be and end up bald lol

Til nxt time!
